Definition
A polyene macrolide antibiotic, with antifungal activity. Upon administration, nystatin binds to sterols in the fungal plasma membrane, thereby increasing membrane permeability. This leads to leakage of important intracellular components, cell rupture, and eventually fungal cell death.
